NCTM Innov8 Conference - Teacher Scholarship Awardee

If you are looking for a math conference that has working with your school team as a focus, then the NCTM Innov8 Conference is one I would recommend.  On November 15-17, through the help of the MCTM Teacher Scholarship, I was able to attend the 2017 Innov8 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The Innov8 Conference 2017 was designed to support mathematics teachers and teams in identifying, analyzing, and planning for instruction and intervention around a self-identified problem of practice related to access, equity, and empowerment.  This conference was not just about sitting and listening to speakers.  Instead, we had special sessions where we worked as a team to develop a plan to make changes at our home school.  This years conference sessions addressed three main themes:

  • Reflecting on mathematics instruction in terms of access, equity, and empowerment.
  • Developing equitable teaching practices that empower students.
  • Learning new strategies to identify and remove barriers to access to high-quality mathematics.

I was fortunate to attend the conference with teammates Lisa Scott and Angel Zickefoose.  As we attended sessions, experts from the above mentioned themes were available to help us with our action plan and other ideas and strategies to bring back to our home school.  We are excited to share these new ideas when we meet with our PLC group on Wednesdays each week, and encourage you to attend next year with a team from your school!
