About The Courses
The Office of Public Instruction is excited to offer a
series of free three-week online mathematics professional development modules
throughout the 2018-2019 school year. Professors from Montana State University
and University of Montana, as well as top mathematics educators from across the
state, worked to develop these courses through the STREAM (Standards-Based
Teaching Renewing Educators Across Montana grant). We are pleased to be able to
continue these excellent courses facilitated by mathematics leaders from across
the state.
The calendar below outlines the three-week course schedule
for 2018-2019 as well as the appropriate grade-level offerings. All teachers
are encouraged to select courses in areas they would like to grow in, build
content knowledge and dive deeper into. Teachers receive feedback from
instructors and will earn 15 renewal units upon completion.

How Can Your School Use the Courses?

Choose a course to take at your first math
department or grade-level meeting. Use the course to center your discussion for
the year!
·
Check out the “Primary Claim Covered” for each
course and select a course based off your Smarter Balanced Category report.
While all courses cover all three claims, the Primary Claim is listed.
·
Align your PIR day for time to discuss the
course in person and for teachers to talk about implementation of new
strategies learned during the course.
·
Have teachers go through the list of courses
during your first week of school and select which course is most relevant to
them. Use the course as a topic of conversation for one-on-one
teacher-principal meetings.
How the Curriculum Consortium Can Use the Courses?

Send out the list of course offerings to your
consortium.
·
Choose a course for all elementary, middle, or
high school teachers to take. Request the course to run right before your next
in-person meeting. At that gathering, discuss how teachers have been implementing
what they learned during the course.

Allow grade levels to select the course most
relevant to them. Align follow up webinars to discuss the course and
implementation.

Choose a course that is right for you and sign
up today! Keep your eye out for additional courses being offered throughout the
year by signing up for the OPI Monthly Math
Newsletter.

Stay in contact with fellow course participants
to discuss implementation and best practices of what you have learned.

Recommend the course to colleagues and start a
discussion group at the end of the course to discuss what you have learned and
how to hold each other accountable for implementation.
Attached is a list of the facilitated courses and
descriptions by grade band. While all courses cover all three Smarter Balanced
claims (Concepts and Procedures, Problem Solving/Modeling and Data Analysis,
and Communicating and Reasoning), the primary claim is listed. Additional
self-paced and group courses are attached.
